The more time that passes, the more "W" reminds me of the gipper. Though lacking Mr. Regan's quick wit and charm, Bush has similar convictions which guide his policy making. They are both presidents that took radical policy gambles that divided the country politically. For Regan, the game has been long over, and he walked away from the table not only winning, but changing the shape of the world as we knew it. For Bush, all of his chips are down and he's one card short of a full house. Will he break the bank?
Many forget that Regan was not appreciated in his day as he was after his presidency ended. Sure, he was loved by his constituents and fellow conservatives but the country was deeply divided on his policies toward the Soviet Union, at least in the later years of the 80's. Regan initiated the Star Wars concept and the left in the world protested vigorously. 500,000 people filled central park and just as many in Europe hit the streets as well to protest the war mongering Regan.
I like to refer to these people as box thinkers. In other words, they have no idea what the world looks like outside of the box. Because they cannot process long term effects of policies, they only see the muddled mostly ugly results the current policy is inflicting.
Iraq never attacked us.
We are only there for oil.
Our policies are the cause of all our problems.
Bush, and the rest of us out of the boxers, know that the only way for us to conquer terrorism is a new mindset. We must reverse our mistakes (yes we have supported some of the governments, aka Saudi Arabia) and bring democracy to these countries. No one thought we could to it. Now we are seeing what Bush and the rest of us knew all along. It can be done, its just going to take a lot of blood, sweat and tears.
No one can deny the policies this president has put in place now. The world is a changing!
Iraqis vote in record numbers
Israel is slowly inching toward peace with Palestine
Egypt announces it will be more democratic
Lebanon wants Syria
Afghanistan is on its way to drawing its own constitution
Libya announces it is forgoing nuclear weapons. Discloses everything to the U.S.
These amazing things did not happen by themselves. Lets not kid anyone, these are direct results of one thing... THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Sure, the coalition of the willing helped, but only in a supporting role. This was our brainchild, our creation. And if it works, it will be our redemption for a war in Vietnam that should have never went down the way it did. Will we leave terrorism in the "Ash Heap of History" as the "gipper" would so eloquently say? Who could doubt us now, only those who refuse to think outside the box.
